How to Support Your Sensitive Child
Kids are very sensitive beings. They experience things intensely and honestly. They move through moods directly reflective of what their body, mind, and spirit are sensing and processing.
When you start to notice your child’s experiences stretching beyond our third dimension reality, it is a good time to explore some techniques to help them find comfort, connect with their intuition, and help them understand what they are experiencing.
In this article, I focus on tips that create a foundation of support for your sensitive child. These will help you address your child’s experience, supporting them in their growth and learning, and increase their trust in themselves and their intuition.
Create a Safe Communication Space
When your child is speaking to you about a metaphysical experience, you could react by feeling uncomfortable or unsure how to address the topic. In this moment, it is important for you to work past your comfort zone to address the child’s experience.
In any relationship, it is of utmost importance to create a safe communication space. This means that both parties are allowed to show up fully as themselves, communicate in an honest and direct manner, and without worry that the other might react in a critical or demeaning manor.
First teach your child the foundations of creating a safe communication space. You are the example, the leader, showing them how to be a strong and stable support system for another human, even when that human is feeling unbalanced, fearful, or hurt. You build this foundation through active listening, conversing, and allowing them to be where they are at emotionally. This creates an environment where trust flourishes, giving them the freedom to explore themselves through their honest communication with you.
Observe Your Child’s Needs
Next, observe your child’s behaviors for any patterns of sensitivity. Does it happen at the same time everyday, when they are in a particular room or with a particular person? Maybe it is upon waking up or when they come home from school? Locating the child’s triggers will help you understand where they are originating.
Be Inquisitive in How Your Child Interprets Their World
When your child is having a sensitive moment, ask them all the questions to help understand what it is that they are experiencing. In this moment, you should try not to place your perspective into the conversation. This step is about getting to know the child in a deeper way, helping them communicate what they are experiencing and how it is affecting them.
Start by doing a bit of research. Read my article, What is Intuition? Learn about the differences between intuition, empath, psychic, and medium so you can be more thorough in your questioning. Over time, you will see which skills your child is developing and naturally gifted.
Here are some examples of helpful questions.
If the child mentions seeing a sprit, ask them for details.
What does it look like? Is it female, male, animal, or something else?
Where are you receiving this information? Again, reference my article What is Intuition? for details.
Do you feel the presence (clairsentience), see the presence (clairvoyance), know the presence is here (claircognizance), or hear the presence (clairaudience). Are you feeling the emotions of the presence (empath)?
Is the spirit friendly?
If the spirit is friendly, ask the child or have the child ask why is it visiting and/or what communication it wants delivered.
If the spirit is not friendly, first let the child know it is safe. Then, ask the child when the spirit will be leaving and/or tell the child to ask the spirit to leave and that it is not welcome here. If the unfriendly spirit continues to return and/or scare the child, this might be a good time to schedule a reading with me. We can get into the details of what is going on and why, with best next steps for resolving the issue.
If the child is uncomfortable in certain areas, environments, or around people, ask for details.
What do they feel when they are in that area? Is there something in that area that is causing those uncomfortable feelings? If so, first let the child know it is safe. Then, refer to the questions listed above to help understand their emotions and what might be triggering them.
Increase their Trust in Themselves and their Intuition
At this point, you should have a bit more of an idea of what is triggering your child’s sensitivities. I suggest reading my article Tools for Accessing Your Intuition. This will help you get a broad sense of various support vehicles easily available. I go through a few of them in depth below.
One of my favorite things to recommend to parents is a trip to the local metaphysical store. Let your child roam and you will notice how they move to particular areas of their interest in the store. Is there a book they want to explore, or a deck of cards? Are they interested in angels, or astrology, or Egyptian history? It could be so many things. Support them and their interests. Explore these with them at home. You might even notice matching interests with your child.
I also recommend checking out the crystal selection at the store. You can tell your child to pick out a crystal that makes them feel protected, another that makes them feel loved, and another that makes them feel strong. Make sure to also pick out a crystal dictionary so both of you can look up the meanings of each crystal together.
When home, tell your child to locate the best place for each crystal in the house. When they do so, ask them why they chose that spot. This will give you further insight as to the child’s experiences. In the morning, ask the child if it would like to carry one of the crystals with them throughout the day. Sometimes if a child is working with an energy that is consistently difficult, having a talisman along with the vibration of the crystal, can really helped them feel supported when they are not with you.
This method can also work with toys or beloved objects with which they have already formed a connection. However, the benefit of using the crystal is also the vibration from which it resonates. Its inherent structure has wonderfully supportive capabilities based off of its unique properties.
If you are very practiced with a favorite metaphysical or divination tool, introduce your child to them. Set the tool down in front of your child and let them explore. Help your child pose a question and wait to see what item they are drawn to in response. This could be fun to help you both open up to working this space together.
Invite your child to meditate. As you settle into your practice, ground yourself, focus on your breath, and sit for a few minutes. The vibration you created permeates, creating a calm and stable space. Invite your child to meditate with you. Sound crazy? It works. As you get better at it so will they. Keep consistent. You are teaching them the techniques for self soothing and creating a stable inner life environment. This is a skill they will have and rely on for their entire life. Don’t have a practice? Start now. Read my two articles, Tips for Integrating Meditation into Your Busy Lifestyle and Using the 5 Senses to Create an Inviting Meditation Space.
These options help support your child through their experience. With your show of interest, the child is being allowed the space to explore and form a deeper trust within themselves and connection with their intuition.
It’s a Big Wide Metaphysical World
Finally, parents should explore this topic for themselves. Ask, yourself why is this coming up now? What does the child need that maybe hasn’t been noticed? How is this experience teaching and affecting me?
Further, look for resources that will help you support the child’s sensitive nature. Reach out to other parents, friends who are into metaphysics, or schedule a reading with me or another professional in the energy work field for further insight.
And remember, supporting the growth of a child who has metaphysical experiences is fun! Understanding and seeing the world through their lens is a magical experience filled with wonder and awe. We should all be so inspired!
